Wayside Shrine [Wegkreuz] - Carved

$1,275.00

Crafted in our Vermont wood shop, our wayside shrine is built of solid hardwood and hand-finished to provide an heirloom for generations. Our quarter-sawn sapele displays its beautiful ribbon striping and is highly weather and rot resistant - perfect for stationing alongside a footpath. Carvings of edelweiss drape the facade while our linseed oil based finish adds another depth of beauty to admire. Over the years it can be expected to fade to gray and acquire an added unique character.

The maple corpus adorning the shrine has been sourced from Italy and is finished in our shop. Arranged on our walnut cross, the corpus completes our signature crucifix that will be featured in various pieces we plan to release.

While still prevalent in Austria, Germany, Italy, and scattered elsewhere in Europe, the wayside shrine is a beautiful Catholic tradition nearly absent from North America. Wayside shrines have been traditionally erected for a number of reasons. Whether constructed with the intention of acquiring prayers for the faithfully departed, for thanksgiving in return of graces recieved in one's life, or for a living intention, crossing a wayside shrine invokes the passerby to meditate on the prayer for which it was established.

Whether the shrine is placed in constant sight or in need of a pilgrimage to reach it, it is certain to strengthen meditation and devotion with each passing by.

Approximate Weight: 18 lbs.

Corpus Size: Approximately 9 in. tall

Mounting: The back of the wayside shrine has two slot hangers that accept a nail or screw and are 10 in. apart.
